Biography and career

Jon Jones, known by the nickname “Bones,” is one of the few fighters most experts and MMA outlets recognize as the greatest in the sport’s history. A Rochester, New York, native with a collegiate wrestling background, he made his professional MMA debut in April 2008 and, with just six fights to his name, signed with the UFC that August. Phenomenal flexibility, an unusual reach advantage, and a wildly varied striking arsenal — including elbow and knee strikes rarely seen executed so cleanly in the heavier divisions — made his style almost impossible to replicate.

In March 2011, at UFC 128, Jones knocked out Mauricio “Shogun” Rua by TKO (strikes and knees) to become, at 23, the youngest champion in UFC history. Over the following decade he assembled a record-setting run of light heavyweight title defenses, beating division legends including Rashad Evans, Alexander Gustafsson (twice, including a clean third-round knockout by strikes at UFC 232), Glover Teixeira, Daniel Cormier (twice, though one result was later overturned due to a positive drug test), and others. The only loss of Jones’s career came in 2009, against Matt Hamill, by disqualification for illegal downward elbow strikes — despite the fact that Jones was clearly winning the fight at the time.

Jones’s career has been inseparable from a long list of controversies outside the cage: suspensions for anti-doping violations, having his title stripped by the athletic commission after a hit-and-run incident in 2015, and repeated failed drug tests that led to canceled fights and no-contest rulings — as happened with his 2017 rematch against Cormier. Even so, on pure fighting merit he remains unmatched: 28 wins against a single loss and one overturned result, including 11 knockouts/TKOs and 7 submission victories.

In 2020, Jones vacated the light heavyweight title and moved up to heavyweight. In March 2023, at UFC 285, he submitted Ciryl Gane with a first-round guillotine choke to claim the vacant UFC heavyweight title, and in November 2024, at UFC 309, he defended the belt with a TKO (strikes and a spinning back kick) over Stipe Miocic. That remains his most recent fight.

In June 2025, Jones announced his retirement, walking away from a unification bout with interim champion Tom Aspinall — as a result, the heavyweight title passed to Aspinall without a fight. UFC president Dana White later confirmed that the promotion had already booked the fight, but that Jones changed his mind at the last minute and said he wanted to retire — a decision White said was the source of their public falling-out, and one that led the league to stop treating Jones as an active fighter. Throughout 2026, Jones’s status remained murky: he publicly said his “gloves were already hung up,” while still remaining in the UFC/USADA drug-testing pool, leaving the door formally open for a return. As things stand today, he is considered retired, with no official fight announcements on the horizon.
